What is Calcium Nitride?
Calcium nitride, chemical formula Ca₃N₂, is a compound of alkaline earth metal calcium and non-metallic nitrogen. Calcium nitride is a kind of brown powder, it will be oxidized in the air, and it will hydrolyze when it meets with water to generate calcium hydroxide and release ammonia, which is soluble in dilute acid.
It will not decompose if used and stored according to specifications. Properties αCa3N2 (reverse Sc2O3 type) transforms to βCa3N2 at 700℃. The color of the product varies depending on the temperature of the preparation. It is black at 350°C, golden yellow at 1150°C, and milky white at temperatures between the two. Similar to other metal nitrides, calcium nitride reacts with water to produce calcium hydroxide and ammonia gas. Therefore, calcium nitride must be kept dry and waterproof. When exposed to the air for a long time, calcium nitride will eventually become calcium carbonate, because the calcium hydroxide formed by the reaction of calcium nitride and water will absorb carbon dioxide in the air to form calcium carbonate.
How is Calcium Nitride Produced?
Calcium nitride can be produced by reacting elemental calcium in a nitrogen stream. The fine fibrous metallic calcium purified by distillation is placed in a nickel boat and heated at 450°C for 3 to 4 hours in a pure N2 gas stream. Because metallic calcium undergoes a crystal transformation (hexagonal crystal Ca→body-centered cubic Ca) at this temperature, the metal lattice structure becomes loose, so the nitridation reaction speed is very fast, and calcium nitride can be obtained.
Applications of Calcium Nitride
Acetylene generated by the reaction of calcium carbide and water can synthesize many organic compounds such as synthetic rubber, synthetic resin, acetone, ketene, carbon black, etc.; at the same time, the acetylene-oxygen flame is widely used in metal welding and cutting.
When heating powdered calcium carbide and nitrogen, it reacts to form calcium cyanamide, that is, lime nitrogen. Lime nitrogen is an important raw material for the preparation of cyanamide. The melt produced by heating lime nitrogen and table salt is used in gold mining and non-ferrous metal industries. The calcium carbide itself can also be used as a desulfurized in the iron and steel industry.
