There are two types of structures. Two structures, the Cubic (CI80 and IA3) (No.206), are very similar to heavy trivalent lanthanide sequioxides as well. Two types of gadolinium site are found in cubic structures. They each have a coordination number 6, but they all have different coordination geometries. Monoclinic, also known as the Pearl symbol MS30 and space group C2/ M number 12, is the second form. Cubic structures are more stable when stored at room temperatures. At 1200°C, the phase becomes monoclinic. It is mainly a hexagonal phase above the 2100-2420 melting point.

Can be produced by heating the hydroxide, carbonate, nitrate or carbonate. The surface of metal gadolinium forms gadolinium dioxide.
Gadolinium oxide, a high-basic oxide, reacts with carbon to create carbonate. It dissolves easily in many inorganic acids. The downside is that fluoride (oxalic acid), fluoride (sulfate) and phosphate are extremely insoluble in liquids and can coat the oxide particles to prevent their complete dissolution.
