Many thought that WS2 would be stable in the presence of ambient oxygen. Studies on single-layer, environment-dependent WS2 oxidation have revealed that the contrary is true. Photooxidation converts WS2 rapidly to tungstenoxide within a single layer. The photooxidation reaction takes place under ambient conditions and atmospheric conditions. One-layer of WS2 absorbs visible wavelength light (660nm/>1.88eV), and oxidizes. You will require water and oxygen to proceed with this reaction. The products of the reaction are tungsten oxide and sulfuric acid. Similar results were seen for semiconductor transitional metallic dihalides such as MoS2 under atmospheric light.
The combination of hydrofluoric acids and nitric can cause WS2 to be attacked. In oxygen-containing environments, WS2 may turn into tungsten dioxide if heated. But, without oxygen, WS2 doesn't melt, but will decompose into tungsten trioxide. The temperature at which WS2 will decompose is 1250oC.
A chemical exfoliation process has been used historically to remove monolayer WS2. It involves inserting lithium (in Hexane), into n–butyl and then treating the Li compound using ultrasonics. The removal of WS2 can be achieved by treatment with different agents like lithium halide and chlorosulfonic acid.

1. Roasting decomposition method:
The mixture is stirred for three hours at 57-60degC. Heat preservation can last for more than 16 hours. Hydrogen sulfide gases react with ammonium to form ammonium-tungstate. This creates ammonium Tetrathiotungstate which, after being heated to a high temperature, can be converted into tungsten oxide.
2. Tungsten can take a long time to react with liquid sulf. To make WS2, you can change the color of sulfur vapor to red hot. You can create WS2 by mixing tungsten with an stoichiometric sulfur flower. To make orthorhombic forms, it can be react at 1600pa or 600pa.
3. By heating the ammonium-tetrathiotungstate and decomposing it, under the condition that the air is isolated, the temperature increases from room to 700 to 1200. After being kept at the temperature for between 24-48 hours it is reduced to room temperature with a temperature gradient between 30-110degC/hour. It is then crushed and released.
This is a simple method to make ultrafine, scaley, tungsten oxide. It doesn't pollute our environment.
