Calcium silicide (also known as calcium diilicide) is an inorganic chemical, which acts as a silicide for calcium. CaSi2 is the molecular formula for calcium silicide. Its molecular mass is 96.2514g/mol. It is a solid, off-white to dark gray or black substance with a melting temperature of 1033degC. It's not water-soluble, but it can be broken down by water to produce hydrogen or calcium hydroxide. Hot water can decompose it. Calcium silicide, which is highly flammable, can spontaneously ignite in the atmosphere. Ca metal and Si can react to form calcium silicide at temperatures of 850°C. The calcium silicide is a black or dark grey to white solid having a melting temperature of 700 to 935degC. 1. By melting elemental calcium and silicon, you can obtain calcium silicide of higher purity. However, the process must be completed in two steps.
Mix the calcium shavings with the powdered silicon evenly in a ceramic porcelain boat. After the boat is set, you can pour CO2 into a quartz reaction tube. Once the temperature of the porcelain vessel has reached 1000 degrees Celsius, heat it. Within a matter of seconds the mixture will melt and proceed violently. You can take out the porcelain boat and immediately the CaSi will be coagulated. CaSi, a porous stone with metallic luster and lead-gray coloring, is made.
Next, mix CaSi powder with the measured amount Si powder. Finally, heat it at 1000oC using an H2 gaz stream. The final step of the reaction is slow and requires that it be heated for 15 hour.
2. To prepare CaSi2, mix pure CaO and silicon together with the appropriate fluxes CaF2 or CaCl2 at 1400°C. Then, add a lot of silicon to it.
